Meet Our Students Series: Ambar R., Puerto Rico

​Ambar is the owner of Holistic Birth Partner and a Lamaze Certified Childbirth Educator in Puerto Rico. She will be joining the Family Trees Birth Program's team as an official Lamaze Seminar Trainer.  Ambar will offer Family Trees Lamaze Seminars in Spanish.

What led you to train/certify as a Lamaze Childbirth Educator?

I believe in Lamaze. When I was a first time mom, I took Lamaze classes, and they made ALL the difference. I never thought I would become a birth worker, but when the time came, I knew I had to train with the best.

What kind of work were you doing prior to your Lamaze training/certification?

I studied psychology and human resources, I had been working in an office for some time now (around 4 years) and decided to be a birth doula and then eventually a full spectrum birth worker (birth, bereavement, childbirth education, breastfeeding are amoungst the services I offer).

Tell us about the wonderful things you are doing since your training/certification:

I have been studying and raising little humans, I have since also been awarded a scholarship for the CLC training which I’m very excited about.

Added:  Ambar recently passed the Lamaze Certification Exam and is now an official Lamaze Certified Childbirth Educator (LCCE).

How can we support your work?

Send money! HAHA joking aside, sharing information, shedding a light our way, lending a hand. I quit my full time office job to better be able to serve my clients when they go into labor, whenever I’m not working with a client I’m constantly cultivating connections and doing advocacy work for our profession. These are all things I love, but I also have a family to support, keep that in mind.

What advice would you give to someone considering Lamaze certification?  

DO IT, start reading with time and study a lot.

What advice would you give new trainees who are trying to figure out the best way to prepare for the exam?

Do what works best for you, if it’s reading, writing summaries, holding study sessions, be sure you know the material and also how to apply that knowledge.

What business advice would you give new educators who are just getting started?

Don’t be afraid to start teaching, even if you don’t have all the teaching aids you want, or if you feel nervous, there’s got to be a first time and I’m sure that families will appreciate the knowledge acquired because of you.

What else would you like to share?

Don’t be afraid to recommend a childbirth educator to a gestating person, you might change their life =)
