Health inequality, anti-racist resource page

Transparency About This Page

As a white woman, business owner, and rising professional in the international birth community, I have always committed to addressing the health inequalities that exist for Black and Brown families. It is only fair that you know who I am, what I stand for, and where your dollars will go before you financially commit.

I recognize my privilege and place of power and choose to use it to exercise discretion. I refuse to contribute to training and elevating birth professionals who do not understand or respect the disparities that exist in our maternal health care system and beyond. For far too long I have not considered that I contribute to a healthcare system that fails Black and Brown families by training doulas and childbirth educators who do not understand why these inequalities exist and do nothing to advocate for change. I will not accept business from those who knowingly or unknowingly participate in systemic racism.

A portion of your registration fee will be donated to organizations devoted to addressing health inequalities for Black and Brown Families, and others who continue to be oppressed and underrepresented. A portion of your registration fee also goes into a scholarship fund that offers discounts for several individuals including birth workers of color who attend Family Trees Lamaze Seminars and Family Trees Doula School. My business is budgeted for those advocacy efforts. Your dollars will be used to fund those efforts.

I believe in and support Black Lives Matter. If you are unable to hear that statement without responding "all lives matter", please find the following resources available for your enlightenment.  You do not belong in this profession. You are not ready. I am not the teacher for you. You are not the student for me.  I do not want your business. All childbearing people and families deserve a better, more well-rounded birth professional. Please find another trainer, and be sure to tell them the real reason why you have reached out to them. It will be another opportunity to encourage you to work on yourself before you contribute to the maternity care system that fails oppressed people.

When you feel enlightened, and ready to advocate for those who are suffering at the hands of a very broken system, I welcome you into this program. I expect you to share these resources, now and forever, with other colleagues who will also benefit, and speak up against systemic racism.  Please join this fight.

If you are here because you recognize that we must always be listening and learning, I thank you for being part of the solution. Please help me learn more. I know I need to listen and learn more. A lifetime of racism does not just disappear. I welcome your resources.
